Inspired by Bobbi Brown

A few months ago I was lucky enough to meet the woman behind the very sucessful makeup brand Bobbi Brown at a business chicks lunch. At lunch she discussed how she got to where she is today and the rules she lives her life by. Bobbi started out in the 80’s as a makeup artist in New York City. She was makeup artist to many supermodels and in demand for many editorial shoots and fashion shows. The one thing that amazed me about her is that she was so down to earth and caring. She built her makeup brand by starting out with a collection of eight lipsticks which then grew into a whole collection of makeup.

Bobbi believes everyday makeup should bring out your best features and look as natural as possible. This theme has stayed with the cosmetics brand throughout its growth. In 1995 Bobbi decided to sell her brand to Estée Lauder. This was not an easy decision but the Lauder empire offered to not only buy her brand but allowed her to maintain creative direction and manage her brand as an offshoot to their other brands in a seperate office. It was from here that the Bobbi Brown brand then turned into a household name. She grew a team of passionate creative people and knew how to look after her staff.

One thing that I thought was pretty amazing is that Bobbi provides yoga classes for her staff in the office. Her staff are also given flexibility for looking after their families and other commitments in their lives. Bobbi is mum to three boys and she managed to keep growing the business while looking after her kids. One thing that she believes has contributed to her success is treating her staff well and there are people still working with her today that started working in the business 20 years ago. Bobbi also is very focused on maintaining good health and eating well which she talks about in her book ‘Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual’. Bobbi is an amazing business woman who has maintained balance in her life while running a multi million dollar business.

Here are Bobbi’s Life Rules that she shared with us:

1. Work hard, but smart

2. Be nice

3. Be Fearless

4. Never stop learning

5. Stay positive

6. Keep on reading

7. Surround yourself with great people

8. Be grateful

9. Be open

10. Have fun

I believe these are great life rules to live by. Whether you are just starting out in your career, running a small business or a multi million dollar empire applying these life rules will help you get to the next level.

I’m a big fan of hers Jodie so love it when women like this support others. I think creating an environment in her office that supports the wellness and lifestyle of her staff is always going to be beneficial. Some great lessons and I’m sure she would have been great to see live! Thanks for sharing
